Mexican Baroque review
Probably my favorite Chanticleer album ever--the Zumaya "Hieremiae Prophetae Lamentationes" is astounding.

An American Journey - Bound For The Promised Land review
One of my all-time favorite recordings of this repertoire. Shannon Anderson's voice in "Liberty Tree" is sublime for the ballad style--expressive and light at the same time. Overall a great album.

Adagio/Romantic Favorites for Strings review
One of the best recordings of Barber's Adagio for Strings, surpassed only by the performance of the Mahler Adagietto on the same album.

Igor Stravinsky: Symphony of Psalms; Symphony in Three Movements; Symphonies of Wind Instruments review
Aside from the fact that this is my favorite recording of Symphony of Psalms, I laugh every time I look at the cover because I think of Boulez making shadow puppets on the wall. Sadly the CD is out of print, but you can purchase it as mp3.

Bryn Terfel - The Vagabond & other songs by Vaughan Williams, Butterworth, Finzi & Ireland review
Terfel's rendition of "Let Beauty Awake" (Vaughan Williams) and Finzi's "Come Away, Come Away Death" are two of the most stunning musical pieces ever recorded.

Alceste [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] review
The production aims to highlight the Greek gestures etc. but they are only distracting. Anne Sofie von Otter sings beautifully, but Paul Groves' voice and stage demeanor are often forced (and this is not helped by the inopportune closeup camerawork). The modern set design detracts from the quality of the production as a whole.

Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker / Vassiliev, Maximova, Bolshoi Ballet review
This performance is from 1978, so the quality of the camerawork isn't very good. The dancing is superb, but I'm sure there are far better DVDs with better closeups of the choreography, etc.

Monteverdi - L'Orfeo review
I love this opera for both its historical value and its music. This production is cheesy and overwrought with melodrama, but the singing is superb.
